I know a lot about snacks. Too much, obviously, which is why I started this blog. Still, I feel like I’ve come up with some pretty good combos over the years, and thought I’d share them with you. I’ll add to this list as time goes on. Note that I try (try being the operative word) to combine protein, carbs and fat in most of my snacks so they are filling. You win some, you lose some. Moderation is the key…
- Baked chickpeas: Spray 1/2 cup chick peas with cooking spray (or lightly coat with olive oil) and bake at 450° until light brown and crunchy. Season with chili powder, garlic powder, cumin and salt to taste
- 1/4 cup oatmeal with 1 teaspoon maple syrup and a few chopped walnuts
- An apple dipped in 1T of peanut butter (Peanut Butter & Company’s Smooth Operator is the best I’ve found)
- Trader Joe’s whole grain pretzels and 1T of peanut butter
- One slice whole wheat bread with 1t peanut butter and 1t honey
- Nutz Over Chocolate Luna bars
- Skyr.is vanilla yogurt with 1T granola (or 1 square chopped chocolate – hey, it adds the fat!)
- A smoothie: Ice, 1T peanut butter, 1/2 banana, 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder and a splash of milk
- Pears
- Kashi 7 Grain Crackers and sharp cheddar cheese (or peanut butter)
- Hummus and carrots/cucumbers/celery/crackers/olives
- Vitamuffins! Truly amazing.
- A handful of cereal (Kashi GoLean! Crunch and Trader Joe’s Raisin Bran are my favorites)
- Raisins and peanuts mixed together
- Lara bars
- Pumpkin seeds
- Trader Joe’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie 100 Calorie Packs (I’m not advocating that this is the healthiest choice, but they are all-natural, portion-controlled, and satisfying)
- 5 or 6 cups of light popcorn or kettle corn
- Robert’s American Gourmet Pirate’s Booty and Smart Puffs
- Banana, brown sugar, cinnamon and plain non-fat yogurt. Warm up the banana with the brown sugar first, either in the microwave or on the stove top!
- KIND Fruit and Nut bars
- Kashi Crunchy bars – chocolate pretzel is the best.
- Almonds. My suggestion? Follow the directions in comment #9.
- FIGS. Just eat them. Or pair with cheese.
- Carrots dipped in salsa.
- Plain yogurt, flax and fruit.
- Cottage cheese, vanilla yogurt, dried cranberries, banana and pecans. This was my mom’s contribution.
[…] I have that 2kg bag of dried chickpeas, I thought I should find a way to enjoy them. Many, many, many, many, many people love roasted, spicy chickpeas. “Addictive” is the perfect word to […]
Hey! Your blog cracks me up, only because I am the same way…. I love to snack. I like to eat 3 small meals a day rather than 3 big ones just so I can have snacks in between. and i ask myself the same question when I’m looking at different blogs.. do they really not eat anything between lunch and dinner?? impossible! haha I’ve been wanting to start a blog… so hopefully soon I will get on that.
Thanks Brittany! Yes, I would totally consider it impossible to not eat anything between lunch and dinner. Looking forward to your blog.
Hey! Thanks for checking out my blog. Yours is great! I am definetely a snacker too, but luckily I’m out of the house most of the day. I’ll definetely be back to see your next post!
(Oh and your chickpea snack sounds scrumptous! I am definetely gonna have to try that!)
Thanks Mel!
(just found you off of Chris’ blog) but how could you leave out almonds? a handful of almonds is one of the best snacks you could have… and they’re so delicious! and if you get sick of plain almonds you can bake some flavor onto them… mmm, almonds…
notsojenny –
I actually kind of hate almonds, but I added them for you.
Also, how do you bake flavor into them?
baking flavor into them is easy… usually using egg white and water and/or butter (to help the flavor stick) my favorite is a sort of spiced almond with cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. but you can also do just salt, or use spicy/cajun type seasonings instead of the sweet stuff. all you have to do is google spiced almonds and use one of the many methods, but with whatever spices you want : )
(sorry to hear you’re not an almond fan… but YAY for adding them to the list! that’s selflessness : )
Honestly, I think I could write a book about snacking. I am THAT good at it! You know what’s also good? Fage with strawberries and frozen bananas sliced with peanut butter. Mmmm 🙂
I have to admit I do love Skyr.is, in all of the glorious flavors. Did you realize that it only has 150cal. and 16grams of protein!!!
will you please move in and work from my place so i have awesome food to eat when i come home from work? ORRRR since u are engaged, u can invite me over to be your helper? bc then i could learn how to cook for myself.
thanks!
HI JACK!
