I have decided that I am going to be one of those people who drinks seltzer. Because let’s face it, there are two kinds of people in this world, people who drink seltzer and people who drink plain old tap water. I’m crossing over. I’m going to start saying things like, “Sparkling, please” in restaurants and then ducking Chris’s glare when the bill comes and my water alone cost us $9.
No. I’m not. Seltzer comes in bottles and bottles are bad for the environment. Our recycling cans are always overflowing by the time trash day rolls around as it is. Also, I enjoy a good glass of tap water.
But, we had this bottle of black cherry seltzer in the fridge and I decided to drink it this afternoon:
Normally I mix it with vodka, which is why we had it, but not on a Tuesday afternoon. Thursday, maybe.
I also consumed what may have been a pound of strawberries:
I buy fruit in large quantities, ration it for fear of running out, and then have to scarf it down in one sitting before it goes bad. Unfortunately, fruit isn’t that filling to me, so about an hour after I ate this I was hungry again:
Plain yogurt with walnuts and peanut butter/chocolate chips. Yeah. Never should have bought those.

It is funny to see strawberries and realize that is not the way I cut them (maybe because I don’t eat them?). I have always cut from top to bottom and I have no idea why. Is there a reason you cut them in cross sections? Do they taste better?
Do other people think about this?
I like sparkling water for a change sometimes. It really fills my stomach up so I try to drink it instead of eating a snack, but it usually doesn’t work.. I still end up eating a snack along with it. But the black cherry kind looks good. I haven’t seen that before.
And to Badger reader, I think I cut mine different ways, just depends on the day and I don’t think they taste any differently.
thats so silly about cutting strawberries. I start cutting from top to bottom and then get lazy and make “coins of out of them” then after I get bored of doing that i just chop randomly at them until they are small enough to fit on a spoon.
ive been hooked on seltzer lately. vanilla seltzer? tasty. blueberry seltzer? has the aftertaste of blueberry stoli.
when i was a kid drinking the original new york seltzer in all the crazy flavors was the best!
I told my daughter that seltzer was soda.
When you’re three that’s all you need to hear so we go through tons of the stuff.
Please don’t tell her it’s not really soda.
And I had no idea there was a whole strawberry cutting philosophy.
I need to crawl out from under my rock.
Seriously.
you make me laugh out loud every single time I read your entries pretty much. love it.
i can just imagine chris glaring at you in a restaurant. haha.
Seeing the strawberries in coin shape just made me realize I was being exceptionally systematic about my cutting and I wasn’t even conscious about it. (Or the reason behind it!) Since I am allergic and don’t them, I wanted to make sure my guests are missing out on something fabulous. Glad to know I can just randomly chop however.
There used to be a black cherry seltzer I loved as a kid (I had folks that told me it was soda too!) I think it was actually the New York Seltzer Co. It used to be in teeny tiny glass bottles and was always a big treat.
Hi!
So not to be too stalkerish, but I think we live in the same area of Brooklyn and I was wondering what gym you go to. I work in midtown so I’ve been going to one near there, but my membership is up at the end of June and I think I’d rather be closer to home.
Thanks!
I have a weird childhood memory of Scheppe’s cause we used to call it “Schweeee-peeees” and then say “Schweee-peees in the toilet” and i got lectured once by a friend mom about how that was inappropriate.
she was a whore.
badger –
I just slice at random, no method. I’m sure top to bottom looks prettier.
Eating –
Yeah, I’ve heard of drinking it to fill you up. I’d rather just have the snack if I’m hungry though. I like to eat.
Kootz –
This kind of tasted like stoli too.
Alexa –
I’ve never had that.
Kristen –
I didn’t know there was a strawberry cutting philosophy, but there is a philosophy for everything I guess. I won’t rat you out.
Cait –
I go to a crunch.
Kelly –
Schweee-peees in the toilet really made me laugh for some reason.
