I take Jack out to go to the bathroom, just like I’m supposed to, a couple of times a day when he looks antsy and/or on the verge of peeing on something that belongs to me, like my bed, shoes, foot – all things he’s attempted to mark as his territory at some point over the last few months.
I’m pretty good at taking him out – I’d estimate that I’ve done it, oh, probably 600 or so times by now – and usually when I do it around noon, I get the mail at the same time. You might call me a multitasker.
So I come back in today, and I’m reading this postcard from the vet about how he needs some kind of shot that I don’t understand, and mostly I’m wondering how much this shot is going to cost me and if he really needs it or if they just want my money. After a bit of thought I decide that they probably just want my money but maybe I should take him in anyway, just in case not having this shot makes him sick or something and then I’d be sad because, well, I’m kind of attached to the little guy.
Except apparently not too attached because it’s at this point, after I’ve been back inside for about five minutes, that I start wondering where, exactly, he is. So I get up and look around a little, checking all his favorite places – the bathroom mat, under the coffee table, behind the couch – and he’s not there.
Then I open the front door, although I’m sure – absolutely positive – that I would not, under any circumstances, have forgotten him outside, and I find this:
So now I will definitely be getting him that shot, and I will also ask the vet if there is anything else that he needs, like really special, extra tasty treats, or, I don’t know, a mental evaluation, because judging from that confused little face, I’d say those five minutes of abandonment were rather traumatic.
And then I decided to blame this whole thing on the fact that I hadn’t had any coffee yet, so I made some:
I feel much better and you’ll be pleased to know that Jack is sleeping very soundly under the coffee table where he belongs.

your stories are always hilarious. and that picture is beyond adorable- im not even a big dog person, and that is so cute.
Hahahaha, poor thing! It must have been the lack of coffee…
That picture is ADORABLE. I’m sure he’s fine. And if not, get some doggy treats. Those always work.
that is the cutest picture of Jack! poor pup. only thing i can equate it to is “abandoning” you by leaving you in your brother’s care once in a while, when you were just a “pup”. might have been worse than leaving you by yourself!
Jack is the cutest! I’m sure he forgives you!
hahahha awwww he looks so sad in that picture! you’re hilarious. also, i like your folder, it’s pretty.
oh my god.. thankfully i don’t have puppies, so I can assuredly say that Jack is the cutest dog I have ever seen. his expression is priceless!
Oh my gosh that face is so darn cute.
Don’t feel too bad. I have a little dog and he’s been accidentally kicked/stepped on/left in a closet so many times, it’s a wonder he still loves us!
Dude! Poor Jack is so not happy with you.
When I was in college, the guys who lived downstairs from my apartment called to tell me that my dog, Tashi, may she rest in peace, had been hanging out with them for the last 20 minutes after waltzing into their apartment like it was hers and settling down on their couch for a nap.
Apparently, my apartment door wasn’t closed all the way and she thought she’d go downstairs and hang out.
And I didn’t notice she was missing.
This is funny because I talked about Tashi on Chris’s blog too.
I guess I miss her.
Hilarious! I can’t believe he was just sitting there waiting for you. Amazing he didn’t take off!
Oh my goodness. We sometimes accidentally forgot (oops) my dog outside and it was that same traumatized face. But I’m sure some food will erase whatever horrors he experienced in those 5 minutes
My dad has done the same 3 times this month. He always brings him for a walk in the morning and sometimes he forgets about him, and closes the garage, so my dog will show up in the front of the house whining because we didn’t let him in. He did it just yesterday actually! Poor doggies, they must feel so abandoned. But I don’t think you’d make a bad mother, you’d be surprised how many parents do much worse!
oh my gosh, how cute is that?!?! dogs are just so damn loyal!
This is the funniest thing Ive read in such a long time.
AWWW!!! Poor Jack!!! Haha, I’m sure that he’ll forgive you – sometimes things like this happen! :0)

Thanks. I know, it’s so sad. I’ve been rubbing his little head all day to make it up to him.
Alice –
Totally the coffee. I haven’t let him out of my sight since I had that cup.
Lauren –
He sits like that every time you close him out. I swear if I left him out of his crate when I went into work, he’d sit by the door for hours until I came home.
Mom –
Are you kidding? It was definitely worse. I never tried to vacuum myself up, that’s for sure.
Tina –
I think he does. And he says thank you.
Anne –
I guess I’d be sad too if, for example, Chris forgot me out there. And thanks – it’s actually a notebook. Urban Outfitters.
Aimee –
Yikes, he’s getting a big head. No more pictures on the blog for a while. Thanks!!
Monica –
I ALWAYS wonder how people don’t step on those little dogs. So you do, huh?
Chris –
And yet, he still likes me best.
Kristen –
Okay, this is a long story that deserves a whole blog post, really, but to keep things short, I did that to Chris one time. He got locked out and had to go to the neighbors cause he couldn’t get a hold of me (someone may or may not have been drinking too much) and when I finally came home, I just went to bed without realizing he wasn’t there.
Yeah. So don’t feel bad about the dog. Seriously.
Karen –
He usually just sits.
Linds –
Food makes everything better, it’s true.
Romina –
That’s hilarious. Dad’s are forgetful. Mine used to sometimes put the ice cream in the fridge. Wasted ice cream is a sin, in my opinion.
Alexa –
They are! It’s crazy.
oh my gosh…A+ to you Miss Blogging Thang with that reply list! look at you go! You are impressive and a role model!
i love how he’s just standing there…waiting for you. i think you should wait a little to have babies…
